10 Creative Ways You Can Reduce Screentime

Normalize being bored.

I mean it– be bored.

Let’s be honest with ourselves, our phones are ruining our lives. I’m on a mission to reclaim my time from my phone, and I plan to take you along with me. We can live life like we did when we were kids! Each day a new adventure and a new lesson learned.

There is a SubStack article I read for my last post that explored some the science behind why life seemed so much better when we were young. I agree with all of them, but I have another opinion to add. Boredom.

If you’re in your late twenties like me, then you know that we grew up in a very different world than kids today do. When we were young we were playing outside, playing with friends, or just trying to find something to do.

All of this is to say that the next time we’re feeling bored, don’t run straight to your phone. Down below I’ve listed 10 ways that you can replace screen time with things that are more productive and creative.

1. Reading/Audiobooks

We’re all in this spot. How many years has, “reading a good book” been on your new year’s resolutions? Yeah, me too. Read a chapter instead of scrolling. Read Christian authors or the Bible. If you’re someone who enjoys listening more, or if you have busy hands, try an audiobook!

2. Prayer

Being on your phone puts an obstacle between you and God. Use little moments of free time to talk with Him and allow Him opportunities to be present in your life.

3. Worship

This can look like a lot of things, but the main way I was thinking is worship music. What better way to give glory to God than to sing His praises as loud as you can?

4. Time With Others

Less screens mean more time with friends and family. Make it a point to remain present with those around you, even when other phones are out. Set an example.

5. Chores/Responsibilities

A harsh reality is that time away from your devices is more free time to do what you need to. Reframe your responsibilities into what they are: divine work to glorify God.

6. Hobbies

Crochet, paint, make music, read or research. Whatever it is that you like to do. Before I challenged myself, I hadn’t picked up my knitting needles in months. Now I get to work on projects again and challenge myself to learn more hobbies I didn’t have time for before. Hobbies remind you that life is full of creativity and joy that doesn’t come from a device.

7. Journaling

Writing your everyday life lets you remember events better and have a physical record of them, and you get a chance to practice reflection and notice trends in your life.

8. Cooking

Preparing a meal from scratch allows you to step away from the hurry and lets you feel accomplished knowing that you’ve provided something for those around you. You can also take that opportunity and meal prep or make in-advance freezer meals.

9. Self-Care

Chances are if you’re here, you’re feeling stressed and like you have no control of your time. Take some time to relax. A warm bath, skincare, or even just breathing deep. Self-care allows you to take a step back and quiet the world around you.

10. Writing

Writing forces you to slow down. Whether it’s creative writing, letter-writing, notes, planning, or a random post-it. Allow your mind to focus on just that task.

Conclusion

Replacing screen time doesn’t happen overnight. You have to make an effort to feel the things that you normally run away from and do something meaningful. As you replace screen time with prayer, worship, connection, and creativity, you’ll notice how much more you get done and how much more you enjoy life. Let yourself experience life and all God has to offer you.
